Poker Gaming Gods

July 14th, 2011 by PokerGamer10

A lot of you may be a bit cynical, but the majority of poker players know that poker is a game of skill and not just luck. Luck is the element that keeps the bad players coming back to the table. Then there are those, a few of them, who believe in the existence of poker gods. I am one of the poker gods, so if you play your cards the right way then there is no doubt that the poker gaming gods will smile upon you.

As a lot of my friends already know, my deranged on-and-off again girlfriend has driven me to different levels of bonkers. My addiction to the game of poker was one of the reasons for the many ultimatums she handed down to me. It was not so much that she didn’t like gambling, it’s just that she hated it every time I lose in the game. She was always there for me to spend my extra winnings.

I had just paid the rent and I realized that we were short $300. As the end of the month loomed and the idea of being evicted plagued my mind, I felt that there should be something that I should do! Since I was too proud to call my mom and dad for cash, I thought I could parlay my poker skills into some much needed moolah.

So I thought I’d buy in to a no-limit $100 buy-in tourney structure game. Usually, I am a calm and collected person. But you know how the saying goes, “desperate times call for desperate measures.” It’s a cliché but you do get the point. You know how it is when you are fresh out of college and the best job that you can get pays $10 an hour. You may need to do some hustling to make the rent and make ends meet.

My girl didn’t like the idea so she said she’s packing her things and will be gone when I come back, said she didn’t want to be with a moron. I won $800 in the tournament and was kicked out of the game before the top 5 players, but the money was enough to pay the rent. I played with my best, and luckily the poker gods smiled upon me.

When I came back, there she was with her bags all packed. Her leaving depended whether I won or not. I told her I lost, working my poker face as I watched her walk out the door. We all need someone who will stick around whether we are in the losing or winning end. If not, then we are better off without them and the poker gods will bless us nonetheless.

What Are the Features of a Good Online Poker Site?

May 28th, 2011 by PokerGamer10

An online poker site is typically an electronic gaming house where you can play poker, place bets and if you are good enough, earn money! What makes online poker so attractive to players? Well, the answer to that would be accessibility. Long before online poker, a resident of L.A. would have to go to Las Vegas just so he could participate in a tournament. Now, things have changed dramatically. It doesn’t matter where you are in the world, you can join a poker tournament easily just by going online.

Also, a reputable online poker site has the option of playing for free. This means a lot of rookie players can train themselves without risking a dollar. When one is confident enough then he or she can easily sign up and play with real money to win.

A good online poker site should also be easy to navigate in. Take, for instance, Sportsbook.com. Despite the other services it offers, everything looks organized and easy to navigate. The quality of an online poker site should be top-notch.  It should have a clean design, an easy to navigate feature and it should also be easy on the eyes.  These great features attract a lot of players from all over the world.

Bonuses are a staple in the promotion of great online poker sites. This includes sign-up bonuses, deposit bonuses and even birthday bonuses! These bonuses are actually non-existent in real casinos so it really makes online poker sites more appealing to poker players. Poker sites should also have a good name that is easy to remember since people these days are having a hard time even remembering what they ate this morning.

The population of the online poker site’s members should also have a good number so when you log in and would like to play, there would be enough members for you to be able to play with. Moreover, these players should have varying levels of skills. This will help you improve your card skills as well by playing against skilled opponents or you could win a lot of money by playing against inexperienced ones.

The poker site must have a wide variety of games as well. You don’t want to get bored in one game alone, so there should be other options for you to choose from to pass time and be entertained.

Beware of Cheating in Online Poker via Collusion

May 26th, 2011 by PokerGamer10

Every poker player must have run into a cheater at one time or another. These cheaters are those who probably don’t have enough skills, or are bad at playing the game but are very good at manipulating the cards to their advantage, and at giving themselves unfair advantages over honest players. While honest players take their time to improve their game, cheaters on the other hand spend their time honing their beguiling abilities and looking for new tricks to learn. They exert little effort to advance in the game through honest ways.

The easiest method for a cheater to do his thing is through collusion. It is very hard to catch a player in the act of cheating through collusion and it is almost impossible to prove. Collusion is when two or more poker players secretly work together at the same poker table. They usually plan to merge and split their winnings once the game is over, thereby enabling them to double up their winnings. It doesn’t require great skill for a cheater to be able to pull this off. This sort of cheating poses a great threat to the other poker players at the table.

Players who are in collusion may do several different things to help one another during the game. They may get together beforehand and decide that one of them will be the one distracting the other players at the table so that the other who will probably be the next dealer, may stack the deck in their favor.

Players acting in collusion may sometimes even flash their hand so that the other player can see it. This lets the other player know what cards that player has, and may help the other in any way possible to win the hand.

Sometimes the players may even speak in a language different from what the other players speak at the table. They will use this to their advantage as they can talk about the game without the other players becoming too suspicious of their actions. They also use this tactic to make other players lose their concentration and give the other players in collusion further advantage. Signals may also be used by cheaters in collusion. They secretly give one another signals since other players won’t recognize it for what they are. These signals can be used to let the other players know how strong their hand is.

Another sort of cheating that occurs is called sandwiching. This happens when there are two cheaters left and one honest player. These cheaters would bet back and forth, forcing the honest player to call their bets or fold. This is also a tactic to make the pot bigger and make the cheaters’ earnings get bigger.

Online Poker Room Tips 101

May 22nd, 2011 by PokerGamer10

When playing with chips in a casino, it’s sort of hard to realize that you are playing with real money. What more if you are playing in an online poker room? A mere click of a button can mean you’re gambling away your mortgage payments! That click of a button can spell trouble for you if you’re not too careful.

Focus

In land-based casinos, many of the distractions come in the form of cocktail waitresses, bright colors, loud music and flashing lights. While in online poker rooms, they come in the form of the TV, the phone, the kids or spouse, the fridge, the pets and other websites.

The best thing to do before logging in to an online poker room is to remove all distractions because in the end, these distractions will do you worse than your opponents. Don’t begin to play when you’re in the middle of cooking or homework or doing the laundry. Don’t dare play an online poker game just when you are going out for an appointment or when you are exhausted that you could barely keep your eyes open.

Concentrating on the game means you’re not thinking about your job, the fight with your boss, your lover, your parents or your pet getting sick, your health and anything else. You’re should just be focused on the game and win!

Be a Smart Player

There’s a huge difference between being bold and being careless. Playing boldly is considering all the facts of the hand at the moment in a calm and rational manner before making any aggressive moves. Whereas, playing carelessly means basing your moves on emotions. Boredom, hopelessness, frustration, insecurity, self-doubt, arrogance, superstition, impulsiveness, laissez faire—all of these lead to a careless form of gameplay.

Keen observation, cautious analysis, patience, discipline—all these are the key factors that intelligent players do which is being bold and reserved at the same time.

Be Calm

People don’t like losing and that’s a fact. The very act of losing, especially when one expects to win, can easily put even the most hardened player on tilt. Just turn off the chat feature and this will help attain a state of calmness.

Be Healthy

It is a form of sickness if you get addicted to the game that you forget to eat, drink water or even sleep. You may tell yourself that you’re just playing for an hour and the next thing you know you’ve been playing for several hours!

Think about yourself and your vital needs. This will help you be a good poker player and more likely help you become a pro since you know how to take good care of yourself. This will help you achieve a sound mind and body to be able to play poker.

Be Sober

Don’t mix alcohol and online poker, they don’t go well together. If you want to play poker then just play the game. Never drink while playing.  It messes up your judgement.
